Know the Signs
Common Signs of a
Dental Emergency
Severe Toothache
Various reasons can cause it. The treatment will depend on the cause and severity of the condition.
Chipped or Fractured Tooth
One of the more common dental emergencies needing immediate treatment. Save the broken piece in wet gauze and seek prompt care.
Dental Abscess
A sign of infection, usually at the root of your tooth. Watch for swollen glands, fever, or foul taste — caused by injury, untreated cavities, or severe gum disease.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Try reinserting it or place in milk or saltwater. Visit your emergency dentist within an hour with your saved tooth.
Swollen Jaw
A serious sign of infection — especially concerning with fever, bad taste, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Bleeding and Aching Gums
Excessive bleeding after flossing can be a sign of early gingivitis. Red, swollen gums indicate infection.
Canker Sore
Small, shallow lesions that develop on soft tissues in your mouth or at the base of your gums. See your dentist if unusually large or painful.
Lost Filling or Crown
Can indicate a forming cavity in your tooth, causing temperature sensitivity and chewing pain.
