Gum Disease & Bad Breath

Scaling & Root Planing in St. Albert, AB

Overview

A Deep Clean
Below the Surface.

At Riverside Landing Dental in St. Albert, scaling and root planing is a non-surgical deep cleaning procedure we use to treat gum disease. While regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline, scaling and root planing goes deeper — clearing bacteria, calculus, and toxins from the root surfaces beneath the gums where regular cleaning can't reach. We direct bill all major Canadian insurance plans, making treatment as accessible as possible.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you won't feel discomfort during treatment. Your dentist uses specialized instruments to carefully scale the root surfaces smooth, which helps the gum tissue reattach to the teeth and reduces the pocket depth between the gum and root.

Most patients notice significant improvement in gum redness and swelling within a few weeks of treatment. With good home care and regular maintenance appointments, scaling and root planing can effectively stop gum disease in its tracks.

When Is Scaling & Root Planing Needed?

  • Gum pockets deeper than 4mm on examination
  • Visible calculus below the gumline on X-rays
  • Persistent bleeding despite regular cleanings
  • Gum disease that has not responded to standard cleaning
  • Early to moderate periodontitis diagnosis

The Procedure

What to Expect at Your Appointment.

Scaling and root planing is a comfortable, thorough procedure when performed by an experienced team. Here's what the process looks like.

  • 01

    Local Anaesthesia

We numb the treatment area with local anaesthesia so you feel no discomfort during the procedure. We can treat one or two quadrants per appointment.

  • 02

    Scaling

Using ultrasonic and hand instruments, we carefully remove all plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the tooth surfaces down to the base of each pocket.

  • 03

    Root Planing

The root surfaces are smoothed and planed to remove bacterial toxins and create a clean surface that encourages the gum tissue to heal and reattach.

  • 04

    Healing & Review

We schedule a follow-up visit 4–6 weeks later to evaluate your healing progress, measure pocket depths, and determine if further treatment is needed.
